Your rock wall can provide signals of foundation damage. There are several signs of damage that you can look for in you rock wall. These signs are the shape of the wall, can serious cracks, and unusual moisture. At R Company, we can help you with any repairs for your foundation. Knowing the signs of stress can help you avoid potentially dangerous issues later.

The Shape of Your Rock Wall

If your rock wall is changing shape, then your foundation may be in trouble. Shape change is when your wall is either leaning or beginning to buckle. Leaning may look like the wall is sinking on one end. A buckle can look like the wall is curving inward or outward. This can also look like a bunch in the mortar or a displacement of stones. Unlike cracks, displacement will look like the wall was built that way. In other words, you may think the wall is intact, but was built wrong. There will usually be no noticeable cracks with this kind of issue. However, strange wall shapes can mean that you foundation is shifting.

Look for Cracks and Moisture

Rock walls are pretty sturdy, so if you find a crack then something is wrong. Cracks that signal foundation issues are usually large and very noticeable. They are not chips. In addition, these kinds of cracks are usually clean though the wall. They are not typically on just one side of the wall. Horizontal or zigzag fractures are also obvious signs. If your wall has large fractures, it can mean that the foundation has cracked. This can be very dangerous and needs to be accessed quickly to avoid a collapse.

Depending on where your wall is, moisture should be at a minimum. If you are seeing moisture coming from the base of the wall, then there is a chance something is wrong. In order to check further, feel around the base and a little bit up. If the moisture is along the base of the wall, but not above a foot or so, then the foundation maybe compromised. Water coming from the base of the wall can mean that water is pouring into the ground around the foundation and overflowing. This can be cause by flooding, a burst pipe, or even a city water main break.
